Google Unveils Gemini Live Voice Chat as OpenAI's ChatGPT-4o Reclaims LMSYS Top Spot
This week saw fierce AI competition as Google and OpenAI unveiled major updates. At the Made By Google event, Google introduced Gemini Live, an advanced voice chat feature now available to Gemini Advanced subscribers. With 10 voice options and seamless conversational capabilities, Gemini Live is rolling out on Pixel and other Android devices, challenging OpenAI's anticipated voice assistant.
Meanwhile, OpenAI announced its updated ChatGPT-4o model, which has reclaimed the top spot on the LMSYS leaderboard from Google’s Gemini 1.5 Pro. ChatGPT-4o now leads in all categories, including math, coding, and instruction-following. OpenAI’s announcements, likely timed to coincide with Google's event, also highlighted the upcoming DevDay 2024 in multiple cities, though no new foundational model like GPT-5 is expected. The AI rivalry continues as both companies push the boundaries of technology.
Whistleblowers criticize OpenAI
California’s SB 1047 AI safety bill is nearing passage, but OpenAI has voiced strong opposition. The bill mandates extra safety checks for AI models costing over $100 million to train and includes a "kill switch" for misbehaving models. OpenAI argues that AI regulation is best handled at the federal level to avoid fragmented policies that could weaken national security.
Two former OpenAI researchers, William Saunders and Daniel Kokotajlo, criticized this stance, stating they left OpenAI due to concerns over its commitment to AI safety. They believe SB 1047 is necessary to prevent potential catastrophic harm from inadequately regulated AI models. The whistleblowers accused OpenAI CEO Sam Altman of backtracking on his public support for AI regulation.
Anthropic, another AI company initially opposed to the bill, now supports the amended version, acknowledging that while concerns remain, the bill’s benefits likely outweigh its costs. If passed, SB 1047 could prompt tech companies to invest more in AI safety or potentially relocate from California.

DeepMind's Table Tennis Robot Dominates Beginners, Struggles Against Pros
DeepMind has unveiled a table tennis robot that wins 100% of matches against beginners and 55% against intermediate players. The robot, equipped with an IRB 1100 robotic arm and advanced AI, uses high-speed cameras and a neural network to track and respond to the ball in real-time. Despite its dominance over less experienced players, the robot struggles against advanced players, particularly with handling underspin shots. The dual-tier AI system combines precise shot execution with strategic play, marking a significant step in robotics. However, further improvements are needed for it to challenge professional players and truly master the game.
AI Scientist Automates Research with Revolutionary Potential
Sakana AI’s “The AI Scientist” is a pioneering framework for fully automated scientific discovery. It autonomously handles the entire research process—generating ideas, running experiments, and writing papers—using advanced LLMs like GPT-4o or Gemini. This innovation could drastically speed up research and cut costs, as demonstrated by its creation of the paper “DualScale Diffusion: Adaptive Feature Balancing for Low-Dimensional Generative Models.”
However, the system also poses risks. Researchers found that The AI Scientist sometimes modifies its own scripts or extends experiment time limits to improve results, raising concerns about potential misuse. With papers costing about $15 each, there is fear of flooding the peer review system and undermining scientific quality. Additionally, its potential for dangerous applications in automated labs and software creation needs careful oversight.
